Cox Earns Two Wins as Softball Sweeps Salve Regina

GAME ONE: Wheaton 7 - Salve Regina 1

RECORDS: Wheaton (8-17, 4-10 NEWMAC) - Salve Regina (12-13)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Allison Cox got the start and complete game victory after allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out two Seahawk batters.
  • Shelbi Wilson had a stellar showing for the Lyons from the plate, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while first-year Clara DeCarvalho finished 1-for-2 with three RBI after coming in in the sixth to pinch hit for Chloe Woodward
  • Salve Regina scored its lone run of the contest in the fourth inning, taking a 1-0 lead with an RBI single through the left side by Jaycee Garrigan. The single scored Lindsay DelGrego who led off the inning with a single up the middle. 
  • Wheaton was able to break through in the sixth inning, plating seven runs on seven hits, starting with a one-out, RBI single up the middle from first-year Hannah Arkin. With the bases loaded, Wilson doubled to left center, which sent both Arkin and Lily Ongkiko home. The next Wheaton run came home with a two-out, bases loaded walk to Emily Schlapak. DeCarvalho ended the scoring with a double to right field that cleared the bases, sending Schlapak, Lindsay Whittles, and Jade Assad home.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • After her showing in the opening game, Cox once again got the start, this time giving up three runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two. The complete game is the seventh of the season for the senior, while the win his her seventh of the year.
  • Schlapak ended the contest 2-for-3 which included her second home run of the season, while Wilson had another strong showing from the plate, this time finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. 
  • Unlike the opening game, Wheaton got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single through the right side from Assad and a sacrifice fly to right from Whittles that plated Wilson.  
  • Wheaton tacked on a third run in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to deep center from Schlapak. 
  • Trailing 3-0, the Seahawks countered with a three-run third inning to tie the game. 
  • With one out and a runner at first, Wilson stepped up for the Lyons in the bottom of the seventh, finding the gap in right center, which sent first-year Jessica Nardozza home.
