GAME ONE: Wheaton 8 - Coast Guard 5

RECORDS: Wheaton (10-19, 5-10 NEWMAC) - Coast Guard (20-9, 9-6 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: New London, Conn. 

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Allison Cox collected her ninth win of the season after pitching a complete game that saw the senior give up just five runs on 10 hits, striking out and walking one. 
  • Wheaton was led by a 2-for-4 performance from Jade Assad and Emily Schlapak
  • The Lyons got on the board first with a sacrifice fly from Chloe Woodward that brought in Assad. 
  • Wheaton added three more in the third with an RBI double from Shelbi Wilson that scored Lily Ongkiko, while two more came across on a Bear error.
  • Trailing 4-0, Coast Guard pulled within two runs in the home half of the third on a sacrifice fly and RBI single. 
  • Wheaton extended its lead in the top of the fifth, starting with a two-RBI double to center from Schlapak. A Woodward single to center knocked in the next run, while an Ongkiko RBI groundout brought in the final run. 
  • Coast Guard brought in a single run in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons had four players finish 2-for-4, including Ongkiko and Wilson who both finished with an RBI and run scored. 
  • Wilson put the Lyons ahead 1-0 in the top of the third with a single to left that scored Ongkiko. 
  • Ongkiko doubled the lead in the fourth with an RBI groundout that brought in Schlapak. 
  • The Bears would take the lead in home half of the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice before Malia Hindle tied the game with an RBI single. Coast Guard took a 3-2 lead moments later on an RBI single. 
  • The Lyons scored two in the fifth to retake the lead as Assad had a game-tying RBI double before first-year Jessica Nardozza drove in a run courtesy of a Bear error. 
  • A three-run homerun in the fifth gave the lead back to the Bears, who would go on to tack on two more runs in the sixth. 
  • Wheaton added another run in the seventh on an RBI sinlge to center from first-year Lindsay Whittles
