Softball Takes Down Emerson 4-3 in Game One; Fall in Game Two

GAME ONE: Wheaton 4 - Emerson 3

RECORDS: Wheaton (11-20, 6-11 NEWMAC) - Emerson (19-12, 7-10 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field) 

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons honored lone senior Allison Cox prior to the start of the game for her contributions over the past four seasons. The senior then got the start in the circle, pitching a complete game, while picking up her 10 win after giving up just three runs on nine hits, while striking out one and not surrendering a walk.   
  • Sophomore Jade Assad had a strong day at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3, while coming around to score once. 
  • Jacqueline DeFusco and Maddie Tomich each finished 2-for-4 for Emerson  with Tomich coming around to score once. 
  • Emerson got things going with a run in the opening frame with Kallista Leonardos scoring Lindsey Lowe on an RBI single to center. 
  • Wheaton countered in the bottom of the second which saw four runs come in on five hits. The scoring got started with a bases loaded, RBI groundout from Emily Schlapak that knocked in Assad, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Chloe Woodward knocked in the next run with a single to left that sent in Jessica Nardozza. First-year Allicyn Cole grounded out to the pitcher, but the contact gave classmate Lindsay Whittles time to come home. Junior Lily Ongkiko drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to left that scored Woodward. 
  • The Lions tried to chip away at the deficit, plating a run in the fourth and another in the fifth, but that would be as close as they would get.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 3 - Emerson 4 (9 innings)

RECORDS: Wheaton (11-21, 6-12 NEWMAC) - Emerson (20-12, 8-10 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field) 

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton jumped ahead in the bottom of the first with Hannah Arkin coming in to score on an at bat from Jessica Nardozza
  • Emerson countered in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly from Alena Jones that plated Jillian Gearin. Tomich also came around to score on the at bat due to a Lyon error. 
  • A sacrifice fly from Lindsay Whittles in the bottom of the sixth tied the game with Assad making her way home. 
  • With the game tied after regulation, the game went into extra innings, inacting the international tiebreaker rule. With a runner placed at second, the visitors were able to capitalize on a sacrifice fly from Lowe to take a 3-2 lead. 
  • Wheaton tied the game in the home half of the inning with an RBI single up the middle from Nardozza that scored Ongkiko
  • Emerson once again found a way to score in the top of the ninth, while holding Wheaton scoreless in teh bottom half of the inning for the win.
