Softball Splits Final Day of Florida Series; Defeat Wooster 4-3

GAME ONE: Wheaton (Mass.) 2 - Eastern Connecticut State 6

RECORDS: Wheaton (Mass.) (5-4) - East Conn. St. (5-2)

LOCATION: Winter Haven, Fla.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College softball team opened the day with a hard-fought battle against Eastern Connecticut State University with the Warriors coming out on top 6-2.
  • After falling behind 3-0 early, the Lyons plated their two runs in the top of the third inning courtesy of a two-RBI single to center field by Jade Assad that scored both Katelyn Barton and Chloe Woodward
  • The Warriors countered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own, before scoring another run in the bottom of the fourth.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 4 - Wooster 3

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • They Lyons bounced back to break their three-game losing streak in their second contest of the day, holding on to defeat Wooster 4-3.
  • Lexi Lovell led the way for Wheaton with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate that saw the first-year come around to score once while driving in a run.  
  • Sarah Pritchard remains undefeated on the season, picking up her first complete game win, after pitching seven complete, giving up three runs on 10 hits, while striking out one. The first-year also did not give up a walk. 
  • Lovell gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right that scored Shelbi Wilson. Wilson started the inning with a walk. An RBI single to left from Riley Benedetto knocked in the final run of the inning. 
  • Wheaton extended its lead to three in the bottom half of the third with Clara DeCarvalho earning her first hit of the day with a single to center that plated Hannah Arkin. Arkin started the inning with a single to left before moving to second on a groundout and eventually third on a single from Allicyn Cole
  • Wooster rallied back in the top of the fourth and sixth, tying the game at 3-3. 
  • Wheaton found a way to recapture the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center from Lily Ongkiko that saw Cole make her way home.
