Softball Takes Two From Johnson & Wales

GAME ONE: Wheaton (Mass.) 7 - Johnson & Wales 5

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College softball team returned to the field Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Johnson & Wales Wildcats for the first time since the 2015 NCAA Regional. The Lyons came out victorious, defeating the Wildcats 7-5 in the opening contest. 
  • Shelbi Wilson picked up her career-best sixth win of the season after completing 6.2 innings, surrendering just three runs on six hits, while striking out one. 
  • JWU captured the lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Summer Ramundo
  • Wheaton responded in the second inning, tying the contest when Lindsay Whittles came around to score on a fielder's choice from Chloe WoodwardRiley Benedetto handed Wheaton the lead moments later with an RBI knock of her own that scored Allicyn Cole
  • Cole increased the Lyons lead with an RBI single in the third inning, which was promptly followed by a two-RBI single to center from Benedetto that scored Whittles and Wilson. 
  • The Wildcats earned a run back in the fourth on a two-run home run from Ally Mishol
  • A JWU error helped the Lyons earn a run back in the bottom half of the fourth, making it a 6-3 contest. 
  • Wilson doubled down the left field line in the sixth, giving Hannah Arkin time to come racing home from first. 
  • The Wildcats tried their best to come from behind in the seventh, cutting the deficit by two runs but that was as close as they would get.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons returned to action for game two and picked up right where they left off. First-year Lani Jackson-Sherman earned the complete game victory after giving up just two runs on two hits. 
  • Whittles put the Lyons ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a flyout that scored Jade Assad
  • The Wildcats responded in the second inning, tying the contest on a sacrifice fly from Gabby Farino
  • Wheaton recaptured the lead in the third, plating three runs, starting with an RBI double to left field that plated Benedetto. An Arkin single up the middle allowed Katelyn Barton to score. Wilson followed with a knock that sent Arkin home.  
  • Wheaton added its final run in the fourth with a Barton single up the middle that plated Cole. 
  • JWU added another run in the fifth with a single to right field that scored Farino.
