Softball Falls to WPI in NEWMAC Action

GAME ONE: Wheaton (Mass.) 2 - WPI 6

RECORDS: Wheaton (13-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) - WPI (11-6, 3-0 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College softball team returned to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon against the Engineers of WPI. In game one of the doubleheader, the Engineers got the better of the Lyons using three Wheaton errors to pick up a 6-2 victory. 
  • The Lyons only managed four hits which came from Katelyn BartonJade AssadShelbi Wilson, and Lindsay Whittles
  • Wilson got the start in the circle pitching six innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Sarah Pritchard completed one inning, giving up one run on three hits while striking out one. 
  • A solo home run in the top of the second from Lindsay Ambrosino instantly put the Engineers ahead. WPI tacked on three more runs in the next inning with some help from Wheaton fielding errors. 
  • The Lyons earned two back in the bottom of the third with an Assad double knocking in Barton. Wilson collected an RBI of her own moments later with a single to left center that sent Assad home.  
  • The Engineers plated single runs in the sixth and the seventh innings to close out the game 6-2.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons looked poised to take game two of their NEWMAC doubleheader against the Engineers, but a four-run seventh sent the visitors home with the series sweep. 
  • WPI took the lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly Renee LeClaire, but Wheaton was able to respond with two runs in the home half of the inning. A single down the right-field line from Wilson scored the Lyons first run, before a sac fly from Barton plated Assad. 
  • A solo home run from Caraline Wood tied the game for WPI with the third baseman drilling the ball over the fence in center. 
  • Wheaton recaptured the lead in the fifth with a two-run double to right center from sophomore Hannah Arkin that scored Whittles and Riley Benedetto
  • With one out and runners at second and third, a single to short from Nicole Kuberka pulled the Engineers within a run of the Lyons. Now trailing 4-3, Ambrosino stepped up to the plate and once again sent a Wilson pitch out of the park, this time picking up two runners along the way, giving WPI a 6-4 lead. 
  • Wheaton tried to come back in the bottom half of the inning, but only Whittles would manage to get on base.
