Team Effort Earns Softball Two Wins Over Wellesley

GAME ONE: Wheaton (Mass.) 8 - Wellesley 0 (5 innings)

RECORDS: Wheaton (14-9, 2-5 NEWMAC) - Wellesley (5-8-1, 1-3 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College softball team put together an all-around team effort Friday afternoon in the Lyons first game of their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against the Blue of Wellesley College. The Lyons, who ended the contest with 11 hits, earned an 8-0 win after just five innings. 
  • Senior Jade Assad finished 3-for-3 from the plate, while Katelyn BartonEmily Schlapak, and Allicyn Cole all finished 2-for-3. 
  • Senior Shelbi Wilson earned her career-best eighth win of the season, giving up just four hits and striking out three in her fifth complete game of the year.
  • After an uneventful first inning, the Lyons got things going in the bottom of the second, plating five runs on five hits and a Wellesley error. With one out, Sarah Pritchard sent a slow roller to the Blue second baseman who threw home but failed to catch Assad, who scored the first run of the game. A double to right center from Schlapak plated the Lyons next two runs. With a runner at third, Cole singled to the pitcher, before stealing second, setting up Barton for a two-RBI double up the middle. 
  • Leading 5-0, Wilson continued to roll, allowing Wellesley just two hits the rest of the contest.  
  • Wheaton tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a bases-loaded error by the Blue that resulted in Assad going home. With the bases still loaded and nobody out, Schlapak singled to center scoring Wilson. A fielder's choice from Cole ended the game, putting Wheaton up 8-0 after Pritchard came home.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 14 - Wellesley 4 (5 innings)

RECORDS: Wheaton (15-9, 3-5 NEWMAC) - Wellesley (5-9-1, 1-4 NEWMAC)

LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton collected its third NEWMAC win of the season in the nightcap, earning a 14-4 win over Wellesley in five innings of action.
  • Pritchard earned her sixth win of the season after going the distance, giving up just four runs on eight hits while striking out one. 
  • The bats kept going for Wheaton with Pritchard ending the contest 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Hannah Arkin and Clara DeCarvalho each finished 2-for-2 with Arkin walking twice.  
  • Wellesley came out hot in the opening inning, plating three runs, starting with an RBI single up the middle from Marisa HenschAutumn Brown picked up an RBI with a knock to left field that scored Hensch. A double to right field from Kalei Oliver ended the scoring. 
  • Like they did in the first game, the Lyons had a huge second inning, once again plating five runs this time on six hits and a Wellesley error. A one-out single through the left side from Riley Benedetto scored Wheaton's first run, which was followed by another RBI single, this time from Barton. Barton's hit up the middle plated Cole. A walk to Arkin loaded the bases, setting up Pritchard for a two-RBI single down the left field line, handing Wheaton the lead. The Lyons ended the scoring moments later on an error by the Blue second baseman that allowed Arkin to come home. 
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Arkin cleared the bases with a doubled to left center. The sophomore would come around with the next at-bat with Pritchard following with a double of her own. 
  • The Lyons ended their scoring in the bottom of the fourth with five runs coming around, starting with Lindsay Whittles scoring on an RBI groundout from Cole. Benedetto drove in a run with a double to left, followed by an RBI single to center from Arkin. Pritchard collected an RBI single of her own before a sacrifice fly from Assad ended the scoring. 
  • Wellesley earned a run back in the top of the fifth on a double to center from Gen Brittingham, but it would not be enough.
