GAME ONE: Wheaton (Mass.) 2 - Springfield 14

RECORDS: Wheaton (15-10, 3-6 NEWMAC) - Springfield (11-10, 4-3 NEWMAC)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College softball team opened it's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against the Pride of Springfield with a 14-2 loss after five innings. 
  • After falling behind 3-0 after one inning, the Lyons posted their two runs in the top of the second, starting with a solo shot over the fence in right field from Emily Schlapak. After a walk and a single put two runners on base, Hannah Arkin singled up the middle knocking in Riley Benedetto
  • The Pride went on to post eight runs in the third, before adding on two more in the fourth, taking a 14-2 lead. 
  • With one more chance, the Lyons were unable to get anything going in the top of the fifth with Jade Assad being the only base runner, after being hit by a pitch.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • In a tale of two games, the Lyons returned the favor in the second game, shutting out the Pride 10-0 after five innings in the nightcap.
  • First-year Sarah Pritchard picked up the complete game win and shutout after throwing five innings that saw just four hits. 
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Lyons took a 4-0 lead in the second with two bases-loaded singles that each knocked in two runs. The first came off the bat of Katelyn Barton, while Lindsay Whittles was responsible for the other. 
  • Wheaton kept things going with three more runs in the third. Benedetto singled up the middle, knocking in Clara DeCarvalho for the first run of the inning. Whittles collected two more RBI's moments later with a single up the middle. 
  • A sacrifice fly from Schlapak in the fifth handed Wheaton an 8-0 lead. Assad ended the scoring later in the inning on a single up the middle that plated Arkin and Whittles.
