Softball Drops Both Games in Doubleheader

Clermont, Fla.- Softball dropped both games in today's doubleheader down in Florida.

GAME ONE: Wheaton 3 - Catholic 6

RECORDS: Wheaton (2-1-0) - Catholic (2-3)

LOCATION: Clermont, Fla.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Three of the first four hits for the Cardinals were doubles giving them a 2-0 lead after the top of the first innings.
  • The Lyons responded in the bottom half of the inning as Madyson Bendanillo reached on an error, then stole second, and scored on an error by the catcher cutting the Cardinals lead to 2-1.
  • Rahne Turley came in relief for Sarah Pritchard in the top of the 2nd inning and gave up a single which brought in 2 more runs for Catholic extending their lead to 4-1.
  • After Catholic added another run in the top of the 6th inning the Lyons responded. After Bendanill singled, Katelyn Barton doubled to left center putting runners on second and third. Lindsay Whittles registered an RBI double but was thrown out attempting to advance to third.
  • The Cardinals added an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning which was enough for Catholic to earn a 6-3 victory.

THE BASICS:

  • Barton went 3-for-3 scoring 1 run.
  • Turley had another strong performance pitching 4.1 innings only allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 3.
  • Whittles went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
  • Bendanillo added 2 runs while going 1-for-3.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 1 - Saint Mary's (Minn.) 2

RECORDS: Wheaton (2-2) - Saint Mary's (Minn.) (8-4)

LOCATION: Clermont, Fla.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Emma Candelaria retired all three batters in the first inning.
  • Both teams went scoreless into the 5th inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth after 2 singles, Erin Sullivan hit a 2 RBI single giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
  • The Lyons responded in the 7th with a solo shot from Sara Pritchard as a pinch hitter. They continued to fight as Hanna Arkin singled and then stole second. After a Madyson Bendanill walk the Lyons failed to bring home the tieing run resulting in a 2-1 loss to Saint Mary's (Minn.) 

THE BASICS:

  • Candelaria pitched 6 strong innings giving up 8 hits, 2 earned runs, and striking out 4 batters.
  • Wheaton recorded 5 hits and left 7 on base.
  • Pritchard in her lone plate appearance hit a homerun.

UP NEXT: The Lyons return to action tomorrow for another doubleheader as they face Montclair St. at 11:15 a.m. and Wash. & Jeff. at 1:45 p.m.
