Brickley nets 12 points, brings down eight rebounds for Lyons
WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University handed the Wheaton College women's basketball team a 70-55 loss on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at Kneller Gymnasium.
Sophomore forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) posted a team-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds (four offensive) for Wheaton. Classmate Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) added nine points (all on three-pointers), a team-high five assists, one rebound and one steal. Freshman guard Rebecca Arnone (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) added nine points, seven rebounds and two assists while freshman forward Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) contributed six points and ten caroms (three offensive).
The Cougars had four out of their five starters score in double-figures to improve to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the NEWMAC. Junior guard Emily Reilly (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) netted a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting (5-of-8 from the line), seven assists and five rebounds. Fellow junior Ashleigh Condon (Hull, Mass./Hull) tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, five assist and two steals while junior forward Megan Grondin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) notched 14 points, three boards, four assists and one steal. Freshman guard Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) rounded out the quarter of double-digit scorers with 11 points, four caroms, two assists and one steal.
Clark compiled a 47.4-percent field goal percentage (27-for-57), shot 42.9-percent from long distance (6-for-14) and 66.7-percent at the free throw line (10-for-15). Wheaton went 31.1-percent from the floor (19-for-61), 38.9-percent from three-point range (7-for-18) and 76.9-percent at the line (10-for-13). The Cougars outrebounded the visitors, 42-38, and outscored the Lyons, 34-18, in the paint.
Tied 15-15 at the 9:25 mark of the first half, Clark closed out the opening stanza on a 22-10 run to take a 37-25 lead into the break. Condon guided the run with seven points while Brennan canned a pair of three-pointers during that stretch.
Wheaton made it a six-point game (46-40) with 12:47 remaining in the second opening up the half on a 15-9 run. Brickley added five points, Shoemaker contributed four points and Kuhn and Arnone both swished home one 3-pointer apiece for the Lyons. Clark answered with a 12-2 run over the next 4:06 and never looked back.
Wheaton (6-8, 3-5 NEWMAC) visits Tufts University on Monday, January 14 for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. Clark (9-6, 4-4 NEWMAC) travels to Babson College for a NEWMAC contest on Wednesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.
