Lyons earns $500 towards their next event with the Heller's Angels
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's basketball team and the Heller's Angels Special Olympics team have won the NCAA Division III Spotlight Poll for the month of October after receiving 4,560 votes.
The NCAA Division III Special Olympics Spotlight Poll is a story-telling initiative located on ncaa.org/D3SpecialOlympics. It features three new stories per month – each highlighting a Division III and Special Olympics joint activity or event.
Wheaton and the Heller's Angels were chosen for the October Spotlight Poll after being recognized by the Connecticut Sun of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in September for their partnership which started nearly six years ago. This marks the second time that the Lyons and Heller's Angels have been selected as Spotlight Poll winners. In December of 2012, Wheaton and the Heller's Angels received 5,947 votes to win the poll.
"We were happily surprised to be nominated for the spotlight poll in September and then to win it again is a very humbling feeling," said women's basketball head coach Melissa Hodgdon. "We would like to thank all supporters of Wheaton Lyons and Heller's Angels. Our work with the Heller's Angels will continue and stay strong."
The Lyons have earned $500 dollars towards their next Special Olympics event with the Heller's Angels for winning the Spotlight Poll. In addition, Wheaton and the Heller's Angels will have their story shared in the NCAA Division III Monthly Newsletter and on the NCAA Division III Special Olympics website.
"We are helping host the Heller's Angels' Fall Harvest fundraising event on campus on November 9th," said Hodgdon. "Also, we will be celebrating this win with them at our game on November 23rd. They will play at halftime and we will host a pizza party after the game."
Wheaton opens up its season on Saturday, November 16 when it hosts Lesley University in the opening round of the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament at 5:30 p.m. in Emerson Gym. The Lyons will host Mount Holyoke on Saturday, November 23 with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
