WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team hit the road on Saturday for the Williams Tournament, where the Lyons faced off against the hosts with the Ephs earning a 68-53 victory.
The loss is the Lyons first of the season, moving them to 2-1 overall. The game was the first of the 2015-2016 season for Williams.
Senior Kiley Shoemaker led the Lyons with a game-high 18 points, while classmate Rebecca Arnone netted 14. Jill Bodreau scored 11 points off the bench for Wheaton. Shoemaker led the Lyons with five rebounds, while Bodreau and Oppie Morris each pulled down four.
Katie Litman led Williams with 16 points, while Devon Caveney added 12. Senior forward Oge Uwanaka pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
With time winding down on the shot clock late in the fourth quarter, freshman Lexi Jones nailed a three from the left wing to extend the Ephs lead to 64-47 over the Lyons.
Deadlocked at 13 at the end of the first quarter, Wheaton opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to go up 20-13. However, the Lyons could not build on their momentum and only took a 28-27 lead into halftime.
The Ephs got off to a fast start in the third quarter. Caveney tied the game at 30 with a three-pointer early in the third quarter. Litman then gave Williams their first lead since 13-10 on a fast break layup. Good outside shooting helped Williams build a 49-42 lead after three quarters. The Ephs' momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as they continued to extend their lead and put the game out of reach for the Lyons.
The Lyons return to the court on Sunday, Nov. 22 for the final game of the Williams Tournament, where they'll take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at 1 p.m.
