SALEM, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's basketball team closed out the Salem State Tournament with a 65-59 victory over Vassar College in the championship game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lyons improve to 8-3 on the season, while the Brewers fall to 2-6 overall.
Wheaton was led by senior Kiley Shoemaker, who finished with 16 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, while being named Tournament MVP. Shoemaker is now second all-time in career rebounds at Wheaton with 815, which is 34 rebounds shy of the all-time record set by Allison Yelle (1984-1988).
Ariella Rosenthal led all players with a game-high 23 points, while Nicole Teta finished with 11 points. Caitlin Drakeley netted 10 points for Vassar, while Julia Roellke pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Rosenthal also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Vassar opened the game with a quick 4-0 run, eventually running up a 15-7 advantage in the first quarter. The Brewers led the entire opening quarter. Wheaton rallied back with a strong 10-0 run that stretched between the first and second quarter, earning a 17-15 lead with 8:48 left in the first half. The Brewers responded taking a slim 28-27 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter was the game changer with the Lyons outscoring the Brewers 25-17, paced by 10 points from Shoemaker. Vassar managed to keep it close in the fourth quarter but would not be able to shut down the Lyons from the free-throw line.
