SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team continued New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday night with a road game at Springfield College. The Pride remain undefeated in NEWMAC play with a 71-41 defeat over the Lyons.
Ava Adamopolous led the way with 18 points and a career-best 16 rebounds for her third double double of the season. Lexi Winder added 12 points and four assists, while Chelsea McAllister chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Wheaton rushed to a 7-2 lead midway through the first quarter with baskets by Cuthbertson, Rairdon and Lexi L'Heureux-Carland. A three-pointer from Windwer, sandwiched by lay-ups from McAllister and Adamopolous brought the Pride back to within one, before a three-pointer on the Lyons' next possession gave Wheaton back a four-point lead with 3:20 to play in the period. From there, a three-pointer from McAllister and another from Windwer gave the Pride a 15-13 lead, but a triple from Cuthbertson gave Wheaton a 16-15 lead at the end of one.
Springfield started the second quarter on an 12-2 run, capped by a lay-up from Adamopoulos with 2:21left in the half to take a 27-18 lead over the Lyons. L'Heureux-Carland pulled Wheaton back to within seven on a lay-up with 1:28 remaining. With two seconds on the clock, McAllister finished with a nice lay-up at the rim to give the Pride a 30-20 lead at the break.
The Pride scored the first seven points of the second half and never look back.
Wheaton returns home to host MIT in more NEWMAC play on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
