Ananian stops a career-high 16 shots in loss

MIDDLETOWN, Conn.  – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the season to Wesleyan (Conn.), 10-5, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Senior co-captain Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) led the Blue and White with two tallies, while junior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and sophomores Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) netted one goal, respectively.

Wesleyan junior Leah Sherman (Belmont, CA/Lick Wilmerding HS) led all players with a hat-trick and sophomore Hannah Plappert (Newton, PA/Council Rock HS) netted two goals on two shots. Classmate Nina Labovich (Alexander, VA/St. Andrew's School) picked up her second win between the pipes by deflecting seven shots.

Wheaton's junior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) recorded a career-high 16 stops on 26 shots.

The Cardinals finished the contest with 15 ground balls and converted all 18 of its clear attempts. They also capitalized on one of their four free position shots when junior Caty Daniels (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewod) potted home a goal at 25:57 in the opening session.

Wheaton won 12 of 17 draw controls, highlighted by Sharick, who won three. The Lyons registered 14 shots, including seven in each frame, and converted 12 of 17 clear attempts.

The Cardinals and Lyons traded goals in the opening minutes before Wesleyan freshman Meredith Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep School) sparked a 5-0 run, which was halted before intermission by Mills with 2:23 left to play.

Wesleyan extended its lead to 9-3 halfway through the second half with back-to-back tallies by freshman Abby Wheeler (Winchester, Mass./Winchester HS) and Sherman. Sabol and Myette answered with back-to-back strikes, which brought the Lyons within four points, but that was the closest the Blue and White came back before Sherman competed her hat-trick with an insurance goal with 38-seconds remaining in the contest.

The Lyons return to the turf tomorrow when they travel to Trinity (Conn.) for a 4:30 p.m. opening draw, while the Cardinals head to Middlebury College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start.
