NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Kyra Schwartzman had a game-high four goals leading fifth-seeded Wheaton to an 11-9 win over fourth-seeded Coast Guard in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
The game was a rematch of the NEWMAC quarterfinal last season when fifth-seeded Coast Guard beat fourth-seeded Wheaton 8-7. The team's were meeting for the second time in four days as the Bears beat the Lyons 10-8 in the regular season finale on Saturday.
Wheaton improves to 7-10 and advances to play at top-seeded Babson in the NEWMAC tournament semifinals on Thursday at 7:00. Coast Guard, which was playing its first-ever home NEWMAC tournament game, finishes the season 7-11.
Hayley McCue led Coast Guard with three goals while Etta Davis and Maddie Rizzuto each added two goals for the Bears.
Emma Ford added a pair of goals for Wheaton.
After Coast Guard scored first on a goal by McCue the Lyons scored four straight, the final three by Schwartzman to take a 4-1 lead with 12:37 left in the opening half.
The Lyons held a 5-2 lead with 11:19 left in the half before the Bears ran off four straight goals to end the half taking the lead 6-5 on a goal by Davis with 3:55 left in the half. Davis would score the first and last goal of the run while McCue scored the middle two goals.
Wheaton would score just 41 seconds into the half to tie the game 6-6 on a goal by Blake Ferretti. The Lyons would take the lead 7-6 on a goal by Meg Sharick 2:05 into the second half.
Maddie Rizzuto would score the next two goals, just 1:42 apart, giving Coast Guard an 8-7 lead with 17:52 left.
Schwartzman tied the game 8-8 just over a minute later on a free position goal with 16:46 remaining in the game.
The Lyons would regain the lead 9-8 on a goal by Addy Paradis with 12:35 left and add an insurance goal by Emma Ford with 10:23 left.
Lilly Callahan's goal with 2:15 pushed the Lyons lead to 11-8 before Haley Howard scored for Coast Guard with 1:16 left to close the scoring.
The Lyons outshot Coast Guard 35-23.
Jena Casman had eight saves and picked up the win in goal for Wheaton while Mary Budri finished with 11 saves for the Bears.
Wheaton will now travel to No. 1 Babson for the NEWMAC Semifinals on Thursday, May 2 at 4 p.m.
