Women’s Soccer Drops Opening NEWMAC Game

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team couldn't hang on to defeat the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Saturday as they fell, 1-0, in their opening New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup of the season. The Lyons celebrated Parent's Weekend as they move to 6-2 overall.

During the first half, Wheaton (6-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) put up strong defense as they blocked multiple shot efforts from WPI (7-2, 1-1 NEWMAC).

On the opposite side, the offense was only able to put up two shots as Julia Cipriano and Julie Beyar tried to get on the scoreboard for the Lyons.

In the second half, it was an even matchup as both teams attempted multiple shots to get ahead, but Cipriano, Beyar and Sarah Buckley couldn't break through for a goal.

In the 74th minute, WPI's Erin Bracken found the opening and netted the lone goal of the game on the right side of the net, pushing the Engineers up 1-0.

In the final minute of the game, Buckley offered one hard shot on goal to try and tie it, but came up short as WPI took the win.

The Lyons travel to Amherst on Sunday with game time scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
