SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Scoring two goals in the second half, the Wheaton College women's soccer team walked away with their third straight win with a 2-1 victory over the Mount Holyoke Lyons on Saturday.
Wheaton advances to 10-5-1 overall on the season and 3-2-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Mount Holyoke falls to 8-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NEWMAC. This pushes Wheaton up to fifth overall in the conference.
With a silent first half from both teams, Wheaton jumped out immediately in the second as Alyssa Gilman found Sarah Buckley in the first minute who netted in the first goal (45:53) of the game on the right corner. This was her second goal of the season.
Mount Holyoke responded ten minutes later with a goal of their own to tie it, but Julia Cipriano gave Wheaton the push they needed to take the lead as she knocked in her own goal in the 73rd minute to bring the Lyons up, 2-1. She leads the team in goals this season at nine.
Caren McCarthy and Julie Beyar kept pressure on Mount Holyoke with shots of their own that were placed just wide. Mount Holyoke's last few shot attempts were blocked by the Wheaton defenders as the clock ran out and the Lyons held on for the 2-1 win.
Wheaton's goalkeeper Taylor Wilson earned her second straight victory of the season in 90 minutes of play while collecting one save.
Wheaton outshot Mount Holyoke 19-11.
The Lyons travel to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (6-7, 2-4 NEWMAC) for another conference contest on Tuesday scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
