HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Megan Healy scored the lone goal for the Lyons as the Wheaton College women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to host Trinity College (Conn.) in double-overtime Wednesday evening.
The game was an even one with Trinity holding a slim advantage in shots (11-9) and corner kicks (3-2).
Trinity (4-1-2) took the lead in the 11th minute with a goal from Taylor Kirchgessner, who was assisted by Alexa Barbaresi and Nicole Stauffer.
First-years Katharine Chura and Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo helped the Lyons (8-2) even things up in the 40th minute, feeding a well-timed pass to Healy with a blast from the top of the box that beat Trinity goalkeeper Julia Pitino low and to her right. The goal is Healy's team-leading eighth of the season.
The two sides battled the rest of the way, but it was the home team that would come out on top with Kirchgessner netting her second goal of the game with two minutes left in double-overtime as Laura Nee brought the ball up the middle of the field and passed ahead to Katherine Marlowe-Benedick who touched it to Kirchgessner behind the defense on the left wing.
The Lyons return home on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
