BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior Brooke Collard scored off a corner kick in the 74th minute to lift the sixth-seeded Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at third-seeded Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quarterfinal contest Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Wheaton improves to 14-7 overall, while Babson ends its season at 9-6-3.
The contests only goal came in the 74th minute when junior Carly Costello found an open Collard off a corner kick. The senior defender headed the ball past Beaver keeper Maddison Gierschick. Gierschick ended the game with five saves for Babson.
It was Wheaton goalkeeper Leann Wolf who was the Lyons hero, playing at the top of her game, finishing with a career-high 10 saves to lead her team to victory. The sophomore held the Beavers, who controlled much of the game, scoreless in the first-half with six big saves. Wolf came off her line to deny Emma Dineen in the seventh minute, before denying the Babson sophomore two more times with back-to-back diving saves.
Wheaton returns to the NEWMAC Tournament for a semifinal contest against the winner of the #2 MIT/#7 Wellesley contest on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at WPI.
