NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College women's tennis freshman Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks for the week ending on Sunday, September 19.
Cooke advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament co-hosted by league schools Babson and Wellesley colleges over the weekend. She knocked off a pair of seeded opponents before falling to the eventual champion.
Cooke cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over a University of Massachusetts at Boston player before pulling out a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory against a seeded opponent from Vassar College. In the round of 16 against the seventh seed from Williams College, she overcame a one-set deficit for the second straight match en route to a thrilling 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 triumph. Cooke then suffered a 6-0, 6-1 quarterfinal-round setback to the tournament champion from Amherst College.
Wheaton, which is ranked 10th in the region with a 2-1 mark, returns to the courts on Saturday at NEWMAC foe Smith College for a 1:00 p.m. match.
