NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College sophomore women's tennis player Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) has been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week.
Cooke won both of her matches at No. 1 singles last week, helping the Lyons remain perfect (3-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) this season. She began the week by defeating Nichols sophomore and reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year Anna Dyakiv in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. On Saturday, Cooke rallied back after dropping the first set to post a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Gaby Suriano of Clark University.
"Lyndsay has stepped right up and is getting the job done at the No. 1 singles position," said Lyons head coach Lynn Miller. "She played a very exciting match with Gaby in our first NEWMAC match of the season and earned a come-from-behind victory by changing her strategy and employing some effective tactics in the second set and super breaker. Suriano defeated our No. 1 singles player from last year, Sarah Geocaris, so that was a great win. Lyndsay also took care of a very strong No. 1 player from Nichols by taking Dyakiv out of her game on our indoors courts. Lyndsay is quite the competitor and competes with class."
Cooke's selection marks her first-ever NEWMAC Player of the Week honor and gives the Lyons conference honors for the second-consecutive week. Last week, senior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I./Lincoln School) and sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) were tabbed NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host Smith College at 1 p.m.
