Lyons duo earns fourth career Doubles Team of the Week honor
NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College women's tennis junior co-captain Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week. Marlowe also joins senior co-captain Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) as the conference's selection for Doubles Team of the Week.
Marlowe earns her second career NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week honor after helping Wheaton extend its season opening match win streak to 13 years against Simmons last week. Marlowe defeated her opponent at No.1 singles in swift fashion, 6-1, 6-1, and also teamed up with Cooke for an 8-2 victory at No.1 doubles.
Cooke and Marlowe have now teamed up for their fourth NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week honor counting this week's efforts. Both players were also recognized on Sept. 3, 2012, Oct. 8, 2012 and Oct. 10, 2011 for their play on the court as a tandem.
Wheaton's last loss in a season opening match came against MIT on September 9, 2000, a 9-0 loss at home. The Lyons went on to defeat Stonehill College, 5-4, on September 8, 2001 starting their 13 year streak. During that span, Wheaton is 5-0 against Simmons, 3-0 versus Salve Regina, 3-0 against Plymouth State University and 2-0 versus Stonehill.
The Lyons host Nichols College tomorrow at 4 p.m. on the Clark Tennis Courts in their first of five home matches this season.
