Wilson posts triple-double in loss
WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite a 2-0 lead in the match and a triple-double from junior Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos), the Wheaton College women's volleyball team fell to Brandeis University, 3-2, by scores of 19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 15-11 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Auerbach Arena.
Wilson registered her third triple-double of the season and fourth of her career with 19 kills (.429 hitting percentage), 16 assists (.571 set percentage) and 11 digs. Overall in her career against Brandeis, Wilson has registered two out of her three career triple-doubles averaging 3.44 kills per set (34 total), 3.78 assists per set (34 total) and 2.44 digs per set (22 total) in nine sets played in those two contests.
Junior middle hitter Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) chipped in with seven kills and five blocks (one solo), while sophomore Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) had six kills, three service aces, one dig and an assist. Sophomore Caitlin Hellebrand (Corona, Calif./Santiago) dished out a team-high 20 assists (.800 set percentage) and also compiled four service aces and five digs. First-year Jodi Katz (Needham, Mass./Needham) led the squad defensively with 15 digs and a perfect serve-receive percentage on 22 attempts. Senior defensive specialist Leigh Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) guided the back row in serve-receive percentage with a perfect mark on 35 chances (six digs).
Brandeis received double-digit kills from Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), Jessie Moore and Summer Koop (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). Hood paced the trio with 15 kills, while Moore had 14 and Koop put home ten swings. First-year setter Julie Kim (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) initiated 44 kills and also added 16 digs to facilitate the offense.
In a match that featured 27 tied scores and 13 lead changes, the Judges rallied in all three sets they won including the momentum swinging third set. Brandeis trailed by a 22-20 score but used one kill from Hood and capitalized on four errors from the Lyons to stave off a three-set loss.
Brandeis also erased a 9-5 hole in set four outscoring Wheaton 20-6 the rest of the way as Moore powered the offense with four kills. The Judges produced their best hitting percentage of the night in set four as well with a .318 mark.
In the deciding set, Wheaton hopped out to a quick 5-2 lead, and the Lyons were ahead, 8-7, at the changeover. Brandeis responded by claiming eight of the final 11 points with Hood tallying two kills in the decisive run. Koop notched had a kill and a block assist on match point along with Moore.
The Lyons made quick work of the hosts in set one with a set-high 13 kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Wilson put away seven swings, while Jacobs had three in the opening set. In the second set, Wheaton received kills from five different student-athletes including Koen, Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North), Sarah Alexander (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), Wilson and Jacobs for the eventual 25-20 victory.
Wheaton (4-7) opens up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 20 when the Lyons host WPI at 11 a.m. The Lyons will also take on Gordon College at 1 p.m. Brandeis (3-7) hosts Emerson College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
