Volleyball Concludes Roger Williams Tournament

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Wheaton College volleyball team concluded the Roger Williams Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (21-25, 18-25, 21-25) loss to the host team and a 3-1 (12-25, 25-23, 24-26, 16-25) loss to Berry College.

vs. ROGER WILLIAMS
Deirdre Wilson led the Lyon offense with a team-high seven kills, while also coming up with six digs and two blocks (one solo / one assist). Arieanne Creighton and Elise Waelder each picked up four kills for Wheaton. Cari Sheets dished out 13 assists in the match and Olivia Wilson pulled up 14 digs. Kendall Jacobs led the team with three blocks (two solo / one assist).

Elizabeth Flaherty ended with a match-high eight kills for Roger Williams and teammate Nicole Weber led all players with 21 assists. Molly Quilty finished with a match-high five blocks (one solo / four assist).

Wheaton fell behind early in the first set, but battled back to tie the contest at 4-4 with the help of two RWU errors and kills by Sarah Alexander and Creighton. The two sides traded points after that before tying the game at 10-10. Roger Williams would never led Wheaton that close again en route to the 25-21 win.

Like the first set, Roger Williams captured an early lead in the second, but this time they never let it go. Trailing 22-10, the Lyons showed a lot of fight, battling back courtesy of a 9-2 run down the stretch. However, it would not be enough as RWU pulled out the 25-18 victory.

The third set was the most competitive of the day with the two sides fighting for every point. Tied at 9-9, an attacking error by Roger Williams gave Wheaton its first lead of the day. RWU responded with a 5-0 run that handed them a 14-10 advantage. Wheaton fought its way back into it with the help of sloppy play by RWU. Now tied at 15-15, RWU settled down to take the set 25-21.
