Strong Opening Set Not Enough For Lyons; Fall 3-1 at WNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College volleyball team muscled its way to a 25-14 opening set win at Western New England University, but fell 19-25, 15-25 and 18-25 in the final three sets, losing 3-1 to the Golden Bears Tuesday evening. 

Cathryn MacGregor paced the Lyons with a team-high eight kills, while coming up with 10 digs and a block assist. Claire Cansler also had eight kills, while Stephanie Martin led the team with 17 digs. 

Emmaline Chiodini led the Golden Bears with 10 service aces and eight kills to go along with her 11 digs and three block assists. Jenna Leuck ended the match with 21 assists and 11 digs. 

The Lyons were able to take advantage of poor hitting by Western New England (-.125) en route to a 25-14 opening set win. Allison Cox knocked down the Lyons first point of the game, before three consecutive WNE errors put Wheaton ahead 4-1. With a one point, 13-12 advantage, the Lyons began to pull away, closing out the contest on an impressive 12-2 run. 

The Golden Bears bounced back in the second set, using a 6-2 run midway through to turn a 10-8 lead into a 16-10 cushion. The closest that Wheaton would get the rest of the way would be four points. 

Western New England took control early in the third set, opening with a 7-3 advantage, but the Lyons stayed within striking distance and pulled within two points on a kill by MacGregor. The Golden Bears found a way to put together a set ending 8-0 run to take a 2-1 match lead. 

Wheaton pulled ahead 11-7 in the fourth set with kills by McKenna Milholland, Emily Bouthillette, MacGregor and a service ace by Martin. Western New England responded with a 7-0 run to go up 14-11, before pulling away late in the set. 

The Lyons return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they host the Wheaton Invitational.
