CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Wheaton College volleyball team swept Lesley College 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) Thursday evening in a non-conference road match.
The Lyons (10-12) were led by Claire Cansler and Cathryn MacGregor who both finished with a match-high 11 kills. First-year Becca Houghton paced Wheaton with a match-high 18 assists, while picking up a team-high two blocks to go with six digs. Sadie Stewart led the Lyons with eight digs, while junior Stephanie Martin finished with seven and MacGregor and Houghton each had six.
Kaylee Deluga led the Lynx (6-11) with eight kills, while Anni Abbruzzese ended the night with five. Vera Bednar led Lesley with nine assists, while Deluga had a match-high nine digs. Abbruzzese led all players with three blocks.
Wheaton fell behind early in the opening set, but quickly rebounded off a strong serve from Houghton. An ace by Houghton tied the set at 8-8, before kills from MacGregor and Cameron Mercer handed the Lyons the lead for good.
The Lyons went straight back to work in the second set, opening with a 4-0 lead courtesy of a Lynx error, Martin ace and two McKenna Milholland kills. Wheaton never trailed in the set, taking its largest lead at 21-10.
Back-to-back errors by the Lyons handed Lesley an early lead in the final set. Wheaton captured the lead on an ace by Stewart and never looked back.
Wheaton returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 15 with a tri-match featuring Western Connecticut State and Western New England. Matches are set for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
