WESTWOOD, Mass. - Wheaton College junior setter Becca Houghton earned a spot on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Second-Team as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The honor is the second consecutive for Houghton, who was also named to the second-team following the 2017 season.
Houghton played in all 32 of the Lyons matches this season, leading the team and the league in service aces (63) and service aces per set (0.58), while ranking second in assists (1042), third in matches started and sets played.
The junior setter ended the season with a career-best 1042 assists, which is fifth best by any Wheaton player in a single season. Houghton also moved to fourth all-time at Wheaton in career-assists with 2,658 and seventh all-time in service aces with 216.
Senior captain Claire Cansler earned a spot on the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship for her leadership and demeanor throughout the season. The NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season. Like Houghton, Cansler played in all 32 matches for Wheaton, finishing the season ranked seventh in the NEWMAC in hitting percentage (.299) and eighth in kills (287). The senior ended the season with a career-best 287 kills which took her career total to 975.
Wheaton ended the season with a 22-10 overall record and 5-5 conference standings, making it to the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament. Wheaton opened the year with a 13 game winning streak which is tied for third-best in school history.
