Volleyball Falls to St. Lawrence; Defeats Brockport

GAME ONE: Wheaton 0 - St. Lawrence (19-25, 15-25, 26-28)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College volleyball team opened the North Country Invitational with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 28-26) loss to host St. Lawrence. 
  • The Lyons got 14 kills out of junior Julia Palomba, while first-year Bailey Madrzyk ended the contest with nine. Becca Houghton picked up 26 assists in the loss, while Ariana Rajaee picked up 13 digs.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 3 - Brockport 2

RECORDS: Wheaton (3-2) - Brockport (2-4)

LOCATION: Potsdam, NY (Alumni Gymnasium)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons had their hands full in the second match of the day, battling Brockport through five sets, with Wheaton ultimately coming out victorious.
  • Wheaton was led by a match-high 21 kills from Palomba, while Adara Hamilton chipped in 15 in the win. 
  • Sophie Wilhelm picked up 25 digs, while Hamilton pulled up 16, and Palomba eight. Madrzyk and Haley McCreight led the Lyons with three blocks.  
  • The first set saw Wheaton fall behind early and never quite recover, handing Brockport an opening 25-20 win. 
  • The Lyons responded in the second set, coming out strong, taking an early 4-0 lead behind kills from Houghton and Palomba. Brockport found a way to counter, but Wheaton continued to push, pulling out the win on a Houghton ace. 
  • The third set was all Wheaton with the Lyons flying out to a 10-3 lead with help from Houghton and Wilhelm serves. Wheaton never let Brockport get comfortable, pulling away to a 25-15 victory. 
  • The fourth set saw things swing in Brockport's favor with the Golden Eagles doing enough to earn the win and send the match into a fifth set. 
  • Wheaton's offense came out determined in the fifth set with the match opening on a Palomba kill. The Lyons remained in the driver's seat, never relinquishing the lead, en route to the 15-12 set win, and match win.
