Volleyball Takes Down Bridgewater State and Gordon in Straight Sets

GAME ONE: Wheaton 3 - Bridgewater St 0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-8)

RECORDS: Wheaton (6-3) – BSU (3-4)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College volleyball team returned to action Saturday morning with a neutral site contest against Bridgewater State that saw the Lyons walk away with a 3-0 win over the Bears. 
  • Wheaton was led by 11 kills from Adara Hamilton and Emily Hickey, while Bailey Madrzyk finished with nine. Hannah George dished out 25 assists in the win, while Becca Houghton ended the contest with 12. 
  • The Bears picked up the first point of the opening set, but Wheaton quickly took over, going on a 16-8 run. Wheaton continued to own the set, with Kyra Mattera, Hamilton, and Madrzyk all finishing with kills on a strong Houghton serve. 
  • Early Wheaton errors allowed Bridgewater State to open the second set with the lead, but much like the first set, the Lyons settled down and took control of the contest. Leading 18-10, Wheaton ended the set with the seven points on back-to-back Hamilton aces and Hickey kills. 
  • The final set saw Wheaton open with the lead and never let go, allowing BSU just eight points.

GAME TWO: Wheaton 3 - Gordon 0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14)

RECORDS: Wheaton (7-3) - Gordon (5-5)

LOCATION: Wenham, Mass. (Bennett Center)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • After taking down BSU, the Lyons returned to the court where they defeated host Gordon 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) behind 11 kills from Julia Palomba.
  • Palomba also finished the match with 10 digs, a block, and two aces. Dinga ended the contest with eight kills, while Madrzyk contributed seven. Houghton finished with a match-high 27 assists and six aces.
  • The opening set saw the Lyons fall behind early, but the team mounted a comeback behind a strong serve from Dinga that handed Wheaton a 7-6 lead. The Lyons then went on a 15-6 run, before closing out the contest on a block by Haley McCreight
  • Wheaton trailed just once in the second set. With a slim two-point, 18-16 lead, Wheaton closed out the set with seven straight points with help from several Gordon errors. 
  • Wheaton carried the momentum over into the third set, opening with a strong 8-0 run. The Lyons continued to dominate the set, forcing Gordon to make several errors, while the Wheaton offense continued to hit their marks.
