NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College volleyball defeated Coast Guard this afternoon in straight sets (25-19, 28-26, 25-23) to clinch the fourth seed in the 2019 NEWMAC volleyball tournament. Becca Houghton finished the afternoon with 34 assists and 9 digs, while Adara Hamilton and Julia Palomba recorded 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Bailey Madrzyk registered a team-leading kill percentage of .474 and Palomba led with 15 kills.
Set one turned out to be a back-and-forth affair until the 14th point, when Wheaton tied things up with a Palomba kill and never looked back after taking the lead at 15-14. The Lyons played evenly with Coast Guard in set two, with the score locking up repeatedly, all the way to 26-26. Wheaton claimed the win with two consecutive attacking errors by the Bears. In set three, Wheaton jumped out to an early lead, but Coast Guard clawed back to knot the score at 21-21. Coast Guard held on for a 23rd point with an Amanda Dake kill, but the Lyons responded for the next point thanks to the game-winning kill by Madrzyk.
